On Oct. 30 I get to go to a non-work show. I’m going with a friend to see Bob Mould perform Sugar’s classic “Copper Blue” album in its entirety at the El Rey in Los Angeles.
Mould has been instrumental in shaping alternative music between his work with the punk of Husker Du, the power pop of Sugar and his soul-baring solo work.
In Oct. 2011 I got to see the all-star tribute to Mould at the Walt Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles, with guests that included Dave Grohl and Ryan Adams. It was there when he said he’d be touring to do a string of shows with “Copper Blue” this year and I anxiously awaited it.
Finally, he announced a SoCal date. You can actually get a free ticket if you pick up a copy of Mould’s new record, “Silver Age,” at Mad Platter in Riverside or Rhino Records in Claremont.
In celebration of the show, here are a few of my favorite songs off “Copper Blue.”
Here’s a live version of “A Good Idea”
“If I Can’t Change Your Mind” is also a classic.
And then there’s the awesomeness of “Hoover Dam.” I selected the album version for this one because I love the intro so much.
I’m also a big fan of Mould’s autobiography, “See a Little Light.”
