I have some very sad news to report this morning. Mitch Lucker, singer for metal band Suicide Silence, died Thursday morning in Orange County after a motorcycle crash Oct. 31, according to the Orange County Coroner’s office.
My sincere condolences go out to Mitch’s family, band family, friends and fans.
I had the chance to interview Mitch last year right before the band’s latest album, “The Black Crown” was released in the summer of 2011 and they toured the U.S. on Warped Tour.
We talked a lot about the I.E. music scene that brought Suicide Silence together. Lucker and guitarist Chris Garza met at the now-defunct Showcase Theatre in Corona.
He said Lyrics in San Bernardino and Skateland in Whittier were two other places where everyone into metal went.
“It was a small family of bands that were just trying to make it. Suicide Silence slowly recruited all of the best members of every band and now this is who we are,” Lucker told me in our 2011 interview.
One of the most memorable moments of our conversation was when he was talking about the mission for the band.
“We wanted to make this aggressive, heavy or fast music. It’s fun to play; it’s something to do on a summer’s night, because there’s nothing to do. It’s like, ‘Yeah, let’s have a show.’ That means everyone gets together,” Lucker said.
The band and Lucker worked incredibly hard and I believe was still just only scratching the surface of their potential. I was looking forward to seeing them at California Metalfest in San Bernardino later this month.
