One of my biggest regrets in life is not seeing Big Star before the passing of Alex Chilton. I was all set to see them for the first time at the South By Southwest conference in Austin, Texas, in 2010 when Chilton passed away days before the band’s performance.
The band has been name-checked by Paul Westerberg and The Replacements (see: “Alex Chilton”) and is still heard on TV (see: syndicated episodes of “That ’70s Show,” which used Cheap Trick’s cover of Big Star’s “In the Street” as its theme song). Big Star also might be THE greatest power pop band of all time (Want to disagree? Post in the comments below. Speaking of Cheap Trick, I would think they have to be up there, too.)
Anyway, here’s one of the greatest songs ever written, “September Gurls.”
And onto another great power-pop band, let’s talk aboutThe Posies. Members Jon Auer and Ken Stringfellow were actually part of the re-formed Big Star, too. “Dream All Day” is off my favorites Posies’ record, “Frosting On the Beater.”
Every day, I wish this song would be put on “Rock Band.”
