AUDIO FILES: Watch Huell Howser at Coachella

Huell Howser signs autographs before filming a segment for his PBS show “California’s Gold” in front of the renovated train depot in Perris. (2009/File Photo)

Huell Howser is retiring, and, well, that’s amazing.

Instead of the typical Audio Files segment tonight, I thought we should honor the “California’s Gold” host, who braved the wilds of the Empire Polo Club in Indio to film at the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival a few years ago.

If you’ve never heard of Howser, he’s a bit of a California legend who has taken his public television show throughout the state of California, documenting well-known places and hidden gems.

My colleague Nelsy Rodriguez has a post about the time he visited Old Town Temecula over at her blog, but I don’t think it holds a candle to Howser’s Coachella trip back in 2008.

Here’s the opening segment:

However, my favorite part of the episode is when he goes into the artist compound for catering.

Huell, nothing but the best to you in your retirement and hopefully I’ll bump into you at Coachella as a fan. If you want to see more of the episode, here’s a link to part three and part four of the Coachella episode.

In other Coachella news, I made a couple of other Coachella 2013 lineup picks today, including Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds and Tegan and Sara.
