LOCAL FAVORITES 2012: Winston and the Telescreen

If we’ve ever spoken or you’re a regular reader of the Audio File, you know I’m passionate about local music. I really believe we have some incredible talent here in Riverside and San Bernardino Counties and 2012 produced some of the best music I’ve heard since I moved here six years ago.

I’m going to highlight my 13 favorite local releases of 2012 here on the blog, revealing one or two per day for the next week. Selecting the group wasn’t easy. You guys really raised the bar this year.

I don’t do typical rankings, either. I’m selecting the artists in random order. If you want to see the full list, and the more than honorable mentions, pick up a copy of The Press-Enterprise on Dec. 28. The list will be in the Guide section.

Now, onto the music:

Finally, Riverside’s Winston and the Telescreen released new music and brought their eclectic indie pop sound to life with a sonic novella.

Few bands make the meltdown of a relationship sound so much fun.

The EP as a whole brings everything together, but “The Lepers” is an upbeat romp, but there’s also a beauty in the anguish of “Bull and Scorpion.”

On a personal note, Winston and the Telescreen was one of the first bands I interviewed when I took over the music beat five years ago. They’ve been working on this EP for a long time (I think I first heard “Bull and Scorpion” when we did the only PE Live on location two or three years ago) and it doesn’t disappoint.
