COACHELLA 2013: Lineup predictions from the S.S. Coachella

Goldenvoice held two successful concert cruises under the S.S. Coachella moniker in the last couple of weeks, setting sail for the Bahamas and Jamaica and packed with music. I wrote a little bit about the Inland artists who kept the ship rocking a little while back, but I think the S.S. Coachella can lead us to clues about who might be on the lineup of the 2013 Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival. The twin Coachellas will return April 12-14 and April 19-21, 2013 at the Empire Polo Club in Indio. (Want more Coachella goodness? I tag all of my Coachella prediction posts Coachellaology.)

Since the S.S. Coachella, on the Celebrity Silhouette, featured a number of Coachella vets and Coachella tends to not book the same acts on back-to-back years, I think it’s safe to say Pulp is out, even though I don’t think I’d ever get tired of seeing the Britpop band in Indio. I think you can also eliminate The Rapture, Black Lips, Gaslamp Killer and Girl Talk for the same reason–they all played at Coachella 2012.

So let’s get onto the S.S. Coachella artists that I think will be on dry desert land in the spring.

Hot Chip
Hot Chip is a Coachella fan favorite and the electro dance rock band hasn’t been to the fest since 2010. They also released a new album, “In Our Heads,” over the summer. Their tour dates are open for the Coachella 2013 weekends and they’re already kicking off the festival circuit with Australian dates and Lollapalooza’s South American fests.
I just hope Hot Chip covers Prince’s “1999” like they did on the S.S. Coachella.

Father John Misty
Even in Spin hadn’t reported the accidental reveal of Father John Misty on the Coachella 2013 lineup during a panel aboard the S.S. Coachella, Father John Misty, whose birth name is Joshua Tillman and is a former member of Fleet Foxes, would be on my Coachella 2013 prediction list.

He’s playing the Goldenvoice-run El Rey in Los Angeles on Saturday, Dec. 29 and he doesn’t have any dates booked beyond the end of February.

Warpaint
The last time Warpaint was at Coachella was 2011 and the L.A.-based group has built even more buzz since then and got rave reviews aboard the S.S. Coachella. The band’s only date listed for 2013 so far is at the Austin Psych Fest the week after Coachella #2 wraps.

Cloud Nothings
Cloud Nothings has a new album coming out in 2013 and I would argue that the band is one of the buzziest in the second half of 2012. Their tour dates also lead me to believe that they have time to do Coachella.

I’ve covered the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival and the Stagecoach Country Music Festival since 2007.
