COACHELLA 2013: What do you think about the headliners?

Here we go! We have the lineup for the 2013 Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival this evening.

After all the anticipation, it’s time to talk about it.

Friday night’s headliners are Blur and The Stone Roses, or as I am going to call it–the Britpop Hours of Power on Friday, April 12 and Friday, April 19 at the Empire Polo Club.

Both are British bands that have reunited about a year or so ago and both haven’t done U.S. tours yet. Following on the popularity of reunited Britpop band Pulp at Coachella 2012 (and subsequent sets on the S.S. Coachella cruises), I’m not shocked to see either band on the lineup.

I am a little surprised to see them as the co-headliners, though. Personally, I love it and I think it’s going to be a really fun night. I mean, Blur is bigger than Gorillaz, singer Damon Albarn’s other outfit that headlined at Coachella 2010.

I can’t wait to see the Empire Polo Club go nuts for “Girls & Boys.” I think The Stone Roses are also a big cult favorite among the Coachella faithful. “Love Spreads” is going to be another highlight out there.

What do you think? Is this a gift of dream headliners to Britpop fans who helped make Coachella what it is or two non-headliners?

Saturday’s headliner is Phoenix, the French pop-rock act that had a solid underground following before blowing up into the mainstream with the album “Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix” and hits “1901” and “Lisztomania.”

The band last played the outdoor theater in 2010 and has a new album, “Bankrupt!” due out this year and we’ll likely hear some of those songs on Saturday April 13 and 20.

To me, Phoenix as a Saturday headliner reminds me of 2008, when Portishead was listed as the headliner until that guy names Prince joined the lineup beforehand.

Is Phoenix a strong headliner in their own right or is Coachella just setting the stage to blow your mind with a Prince-like surprise?

Rounding out the headliners on the 2013 Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival lineup is the Red Hot Chili Peppers. They’re SoCal staples. They released an album last year. They still play arenas.

It’s the first time the band has played Coachella since 2007, when they headlined on Saturday night the day before Rage Against the Machine reunited. As always, it was a high-energy set.

However, this year I’m really surprised to see them. I figured we’d see bassist Flea as part of Atoms for Peace, Thom Yorke’s side project, not with RHCP.

Part of me is really hoping they’ll do something like bust out “Blood Sugar Sex Magik” in its entirety.
