Last night, The Scenestar broke the story of Lou Reed canceling his Coachella and related California appearances.
The last time there was a cancellation this high on the bill (that didn’t involve Icelandic volcanoes) was in 2009, when Amy Winehouse had to bow out because of visa issues.
Coachella announced Winehouse’s cancellation in early March and had replaced her spot on the bill with M.I.A. less than two weeks later. (My ears STILL hurt thinking about the overuse of airhorn in that set).
Since Reed is in a high profile spot on Friday, we might see a replacement for him. (Or not, the lineup is so deep this year they might be able to get away without a high-profile replacement).

My suggestions are below. Share yours in the comments and be sure to vote in the poll.
Tom Waits
Like Lou Reed, Tom Waits is an icon and I keep waiting for him to show up at Coachella. The desert seems like a place he’d dig.
David Byrne
Not only is Byrne royalty, at least half of the bands on the Coachella lineup wouldn’t exist without Byrne and the Talking Heads. He also recorded with Coachella 2012 artist St. Vincent.
Laurie Anderson
Lou Reed’s wife is the experimental musician and performance artist Laurie Anderson. She should just take his place and do an incredible version of “O Superman.”
Iggy Pop
While Iggy Pop could headline on his own, he would be a pretty amazing replacement for Lou Reed. Iggy and the Stooges recently did new tunes at SXSW, so maybe it’s not terribly far-fetched.
Nick Cave
Nick Cave is already playing the fest on Sunday wit the Bad Seeds and his side project Grinderman is on Friday’s bill. Let’s just give Cave more stage time. He is awesome.
