Not everyone at Coachella is in their 20s … or their 30s … or even under retirement age.
Just ask brothers Jan and Jon Nichols.
Jan is 70 and Jon is 65. It’s is their fifth Coachella festival. Jan lives in Laguna Beach, Jon outside Anchorage, Ak. He comes down every year to see the family and find out what’s new and hot in music.
Their daughters, in their 20s, are jealous their dads can afford to go and they can’t.
“Music has always been a part of our lives, ” Jan said. They saw the Stones, the Beatles, Janis Joplin, Jimi Hendrix. They were teachers, and as they’ve gotten older, they’ve tried to keep up with what’s current.
“The headliners are kind of weak this year, but we’re here for the unknown bands — to us,” said Jan, who listened online to all 177 acts on this year’s lineup to figure out what he wanted to check out. (Jon pretty much relies on his big brother’s advice, though they occasionally disagree or split up to see different bands.)
On Friday, some of their favorites were FOALS, Tegan and Sara, Grinderman and Metric. Good taste.
