Father John Misty poked fun at the hype surrounding the Coachella Festival in a tongue-in-cheek set that would have played as well at the Stagecoach Country Music Festival as it did at Coachella.
“You know what this reminds me of? An Applebee’s, neon lights and another Applebee’s every other block,” he said.
As he played through seem honky tonk and alt-country inspired tunes, he also joked about the rumored guest act that never materialized–Daft Punk.
“Sometimes I do wish I performed in a robot hat…That must be one of the true esoteric joys of this experience,” he said.
Then it was on to the hologram of Tupac Shakur that stunned Coachella in 2012 during Dr. dre and Snoop Dogg’s finale.
He said that he actually was a hologram and in fact Father John Misty was more than a hologram.
“It wasn’t a hologram it was a full functioning android,” Misty said. “That android was really lifelike and even had the same terrible sense of humor. ”
I left the set early to catch Nick Cave, but I will be picking up some of his tunes.
I also think Father John Misty might be the key to explaining the R.Kelly appearance during Phoenix’s set Saturday night. Aboard the SS Coachella, Father John Misty sang “I Believe I Can Fly.” Maybe R. Kelly saw it, thought he had to be part of Coachella and joined Phoenix.
