The giant snail apparently is a Smith Westerns fan, too.

I had no idea the art installation, officially called Helix Poeticus, could move. But move it did, slowly, right into the audience gathered at the Outdoor Theater for the Sunday afternoon set.

The band didn’t acknowledge their large fan. The crowd sure did, running over to take pictures as it crept closer and obscured the left video screen. But in typical Smith Westerns style, there wasn’t much stage banter and none of it mentioned an approaching giant snail.

The set was just what I needed to amp up for one last day of Coachella. Though it was a little weird to be hearing songs like “End of the Night” and “3 a.m. Spiritual” (off their new album) at 2 in the afternoon.
