Amid gusts of wind that gave the final night of the first weekend of the 2013 Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival a dusty, eerie feel, one of California’s biggest bands closed out one of California’s biggest events.
The Red Hot Chili Peppers’ set was jam-packed with hits from the band’s multiple multi-platinum albums.

“Monarchy of Roses,” off the band’s latest, “I’m With You,” opened the set that had thousands dancing in front of the Coachella stage Sunday night, many wearing bandanas to cover their faces and sunglasses at night to keep the dust out of their eyes.
The band was dealing with the dust as well. Bassist Flea compared it to the dust bowl and Woody Guthrie.
“I feel like I’m going to go home and throw up a sandbox for my small child,” singer Anthony Kiedis said.
The band soldiered on with a seemingly never-ending stream of hits, mostly from “Californication” album and after, but “Under the Bridge” and the band’s take on “Higher Ground” did make it into the set.
