COACHELLA 2013: Friday highlights, weekend two

Quick wrap-up of Friday:

We tried to hit completely different things than last week, with the exception of one special band.

Getting in
Getting in took more time and had more searches. With the tragic events in Boston this week, it is to be expected.

Yuma Tent
The Yuma Tent is amazing, plays deep house and is air conditioned. You can hang out on a couch and watch a hula hooper. Or you can dance like there’s no tomorrow (or Sahara Tent) under disco balls on a wooden floor. Is this what Studio 54 would be like at Coachella?

Palma Violets
They reminded me of the Libertines, but without all of the drama of the Libertines. See photos of Palma Violets.

The Stone Roses
The Stone Roses had a pretty laser lights show. And an American Sign Language interpreter. Beyond that, at points I kind of felt like we were getting to the “Spinal Tap” jazz odyssey, but with psychedelic rock.
There was a drum solo.
The good news: The field was maybe 1/4 full. I’ve heard it was better than last week’s turnout. See photos from The Stone Roses at weekend one.

Grinderman
If Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds’ set last Sunday was my soundtrack to entering hell and meeting the devil, then Grinderman is what was playing when death happens. It’s flying down a dark desert freeway with twists and turns on a speeding motorcycle. See photos of Grinderman from weekend one.

Local Natives
California’s sons Local Natives took the sunset slot at the Outdoor Theatre and had one of those Coachella moments with set-ender “Sun Hands.” Photos of Local Natives.

Thomas Gold
If you are a DJ in the Sahara Tent (or anywhere, for that matter), playing “Seven Nation Army” will make the place go bananas.

Rose Garden
You have to be a VIP to get into Coachella’s rose garden, but you can stare at the pretty roses from outside the Sahara Tent. There is even a champagne stand.

Best EDM stage setup
Infected Mushroom had giant orbs. White orbs.

Best dancing outside of any EDM set
Tokyo Ska Paradise Orchestra had people doing a weird shanking conga line thing during their afternoon set.

Facemelters of Coachella
Japandroids were so great weekend one that I had to see them weekend two. They didn’t disappoint. And they even played my favorite song, “Wet Hair,” which they didn’t play last week.

Beach House
Very moody and appropriate as darkness and fog settled on the Empire Polo Club.

Band of Horses
Plaid + Beards + Indie Rock = Awesome

What were your day one highlights?
