Still looking for something fun to do tonight?
How about catching hit band Neon Trees play a show in the town where they started? As an added bonus, the show, which is at Vista Murrieta High School, benefits the school’s extracurricular programs.
Why Murrieta? Well, singer Tyler Glenn and guitarist Chris Allen both grew up there and it’s actually where the band formed before relocating to Utah years ago.
It’s a family-friendly, drug, alcohol, tobacco-free event. As I mentioned, it’s a fundraiser for the school’s programs. Tickets are still on sale and you can pick them up at the gate, too. If you’ve never seen them before, you’re in for a treat.
The Active Set, from Los Angeles, is one of the openers. Another is The New Division, a fantastic local band that has been getting buzz all over the place. Guitarist Brock Woolsey is a VMHS alum, too.
The music starts at 6 p.m. The parking opens at 4 p.m. and there will be vendors and more. Colleague Michelle Klampe wrote more about what’s happening before the bands take the stage.
I’ve been covering the band since I first took over as the music reporter six years ago and I can say they are among the nicest, most genuine people I’ve met. I’m really excited to see them play such a huge hometown show and I feel very fortunate that I’ll get to catch up with them a little bit today.
Here are a couple of stories from the archives. This article is from just before the band played the 2011 Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival, a year after their major label debut “Habits” was released and “Animal” broke big time.
Last year I caught up with Chris and Tyler again to talk about follow-up album “Picture Show.”
The deep cuts I’m hoping to hear tonight include “Sins of My Youth” and “Love and Affection” from “Habits,” as well as “Teenage Sounds” and “Weekend” from “Picture Show.”
I’ll be posting some updates from the day via Twitter. You can follow along below.
Here’s a blast from the past–Neon Trees performing “Sins of My Youth” at a Hot Topic in Montclair back in 2010.
