LOCAL FAVORITES 2013: Science Fiction Theater

Last week in the Guide, we published my list of favorite local music of 2013. If you missed the big spread in the paper, I’ll be posting my favorites through the end of the year.

Today’s entry comes from Science Fiction Theater, a band that consistently raises the bar.

“The Happy Sadness”

Recorded in bedrooms, hallways and a kitchen, Science Fiction Theater’s second full-length draws from Buddy Holly inspiration and crafts beautiful songs that are “The Happy Sadness.” The band envisioned the collection as snapshots of their musical journey over the last two years.

The band promises that less time will elapse before its next release. It’s been described as a spacy David Bowie-inspired disc recorded at the same time as “The Happy Sadness.”

Check out two of the songs from “The Happy Sadness” from Science Fiction Theater’s PE Live session.

Midnight Satellites, also known as cover band Master Splinter and the Shredders, changed their name for original music and put out the best collection of ’90s inspired grunge-filled rock since the 21st century started.

If you love Soundgarden and Alice in Chains from the era when Beavis and Butt-Head introduced them to the world, pick up this record.

The band stopped by a while back to perform some of the songs from it in a special PE Live session.

LOCAL FAVORITES 2013: Lee Koch

Merry Christmas!

On Friday, Dec. 20, my list of favorite local music of 2013 came out in The Press-Enterprise’s Guide section.

If you missed the big spread in the paper, I’ll be posting my favorites over the next week or so.

Today’s album is full of love, which is appropriate for the holiday, and comes from Lee Koch.

“Whole Heart”

After a stint on “The Voice” put him in homes around the nation, Lee Koch wrote the great tongue-in-cheek ditty “Celebrities.” But it’s the his tales of redemption, love, perseverance, and spirituality that make “Whole Heart” the complete package.

LOCAL FAVORITES 2013: The Jezebelles

On Friday, Dec. 20, my list of favorite local music of 2013 came out in The Press-Enterprise’s Guide section.

If you missed the big spread in the paper, I’ll be posting my favorites over the next week or so.

Today we have The Jezebelles, who may very well take over the world.

“Girl. Rock. Choir.”

America’s only all female rock choir released it’s debut EP this year. Alien Ant Farm’s Mike Cosgrove produced the disc, which is fun, but also relatable to any woman who has been in a bad relationship.

The three-song EP is a bright start for the group after originally performing only covers.

Get to know more about the group with the videos they did for our PE Live series.

Since we’re only a day away from Christmas, I’m excited to share the closest thing we have to a PE Live Christmas performance–Bob & Lisa performing “Mary Xmas.” There’s red clothing and a chimney involved, but this isn’t one that the kids will sing around the Christmas tree.

We filmed this one a few weeks back out at Hangar 24 in Redlands.

With the holiday, we won’t be posting a new PE Live this week, but we have some more great music coming up soon, including the Chris Thayer Band and Say True. Want to watch more of Bob & Lisa on PE Live? Head on over to the iGuide.

Riverside’s ska heroes started working on this album back in 2008 before shelving it. The traditional ska meshed with journeys into other genres was well worth waiting for.
