RIVERSIDE: Jason Mraz brings special acoustic show to the Fox (updated)

UPDATE 2/19: The Fox has added a second Jason Mraz show.

The Fox Performing Arts Center in Riverside has snagged a special acoustic appearance from Jason Mraz for its calendar.

The radio-friendly singer-songwriter, known for his catchy pop rock hits such as “I’m Yours,” “The Remedy” and “You and I Both,” is doing a special run of West Coast tour dates.

He’s only performing eight shows and the lone Southern California gig is at the Fox on March 27.

Tickets go on sale Friday, Feb. 21 at noon, with an artist fan club and a Citi pre-sale happening on Wednesday and Thursday. The tickets are $63.50-$85.50, before fees.

SAN BERNARDINO: Mayhem Festival will return to San Manuel Amphitheater

Heavy metal fans rejoice–the Rockstar Energy Drink Mayhem Festival will kick off its annual run in Devore once again.

This year, the tour will hit 24 venues, beginning with San Manuel Amphitheater in Devore on July 5.

The lineup of artists won’t be announced until March 31, but organizers have said that this year’s festival will include four stages of music and 19 bands. There will also be a freestyle Motocross and a Motorsports exhibition area.

Tickets will go on sale on Saturday, April 5.

RIVERSIDE: Larry the Cable Guy, Tech N9ne booked for downtown venues

The acts just keep on coming for the Fox Performing Arts Center and Riverside Municipal Auditorium, with a new batch of performers announced for the downtown Riverside venues.

The Fox will see the 30th anniversary of the Happy Together tour with Flo & Eddie of The Turtles, Mark Farner, Mitch Ryder, Gary Lewis and the Playboys and former Three Dog Night singer Chuck Negron on Wednesday, July 16 and two shows from comedian Larry the Cable Guy on Friday, Sept. 12.

Tickets for Happy Together are priced at $35.50-$65.50, before fees, and are $41-$96 for Larry the Cable Guy, before fees.

Meanwhile, the Riverside Municipal Auditorium will host rapper Tech N9ne on Tuesday, June 3, and the Beatles Vs. Stones musical tribute battle on Saturday, June 21. The Tech N9ne show is open to guests 18 and older and tickets are $23-$33, before fees. Tickets are $10-$18 for Beatles Vs. Stones, before fees.

Tickets for all of the newly announced shows will go on sale Friday, Feb. 21 at noon.

LAKE ELSINORE: Good Vibes on the Lake Festival makes debut

Lake Elsinore is getting a new music festival in town this weekend. The Good Vibes on the Lake Festival will run Saturday, Feb. 15 and Sunday, Feb. 16 and feature sets from Sean Kingston, who just played Bear Mountain last week, E-40, Tribal Seeds, Tha Dogg Pound, Fortunate Youth, New Kingston, Marlon Asher, The Expanders, Spawnbreezie, Common Sense, Mystic Roots, Irie Love, Krooked Treez, Ezzrah, Go Gettas and Iya Terra.

The first-time festival will include food and craft vendors and a children’s play area.

10 a.m. Saturday and Sunday, La Laguna Resort & Boat Launch, 32040 Riverside Drive, Lake Elsinore, $55 for a one-day pass, $75 for a two-day pass. Children 5 and younger get in for free.

MUSIC: Babyface talks about lasting songs

I interviewed Kenny “Babyface” Edmonds a couple of weeks back for Friday’s Go + Do cover (he’s playing Spotlight 29 Casino on Friday, Feb. 14 ) and we got to talking about his back catalog.

He has worked with a staggering amount of artists from Aretha Franklin to Eric Clapton to the members of New Edition.

“It was always hard to tell whether you were writing something that was going to last forever,” he said. “The only test is that years later you listen to the radio and something comes on and whether it still feels good.”

He said some songs get better with time. I asked him to elaborate and he mentioned the songs from the 1990s he wrote for Bobby Brown and Johnny Gill

“I think the 90s music starting to feel really good now, to a lot of people. There was a positivity that was there that isn’t in a lot of things today, or over the past decade or so,” Edmonds said.

He also performs in Anaheim on Sunday, Feb. 16.

PALM SPRINGS: Doo Wop in the Desert gets modern

The Coachella Valley Art Scene has been putting on its annual Valentine’s themed show, Doo Wop in the Desert, for five years.

This year the event gets an even higher profile as part of Palm Springs Modernism Week and larger digs at the Hard Rock Hotel. (Goldenvoice has joined with the Coachella Valley Art Scene to put on the event, too.)

The desert’s own DJ Alf Alpha (a Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival vet), will be on the decks and The Evaros will be playing live music.

Dressing up in a poodle skirt or sporting a varsity jacket is part of the fun—the event is also a 1950s-themed costume party.

9 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 15, Hard Rock Hotel, 150 S. Indian Canyon Drive, Palm Springs, $25, 18 and older only.

SAN BERNARDINO: Basscon will visit Orange Show on March 29

For those who love electronic music, Insomniac’s Crush, set for the National Orange Show Events Center in San Bernardino on Saturday, is sold out, but the promoter will bring another event to town on Saturday, March 29.

Called Basscon, the show will feature D-Block & S-te-fan, Isaac, Darksiderz, Saymyname and a special guest. The event is dedicated to the subgenres of hard Techno, hard House, hardstyle and hard trance.

The show is open to guests 18 and older. Tickets are $40, before fees, and can be purchased at www.flavorus.com.

RIVERSIDE: Live Nation books Queen tribute, Kid Ink

Two more shows have been announced for Riverside’s downtown venues operated by Live Nation.

Up first is One Night of Queen at the Fox Performing Arts Center on March 7. The show has been a popular perennial favorite at the venue. Tickets are on sale now through Live Nation and are $16-$53, plus fees. You can pick them up at www.livenation.com or at the Fox box office for less fees.

Also, a new show has been added to the lineup of the Riverside Municipal Auditorium. Rapper Kid Ink will headline a show at the venue on April 8. Tickets, priced at $18-$28, before fees, go on sale Friday, Feb. 14 at noon at www.livenation.com. King Los and Bizzy Crook will also perform. The show is open to guests 16 years old and older.

Singer, rapper and songwriter Sean Kingston will perform a free show at Bear Mountain in Big Bear Lake on Saturday, Feb. 8.

The noon performance is part of the “Snowed In” concert from Los Angeles hip-hop radio station Power 106.

Kingston, who is Jamaican-American, has had big hits with songs such as “Beautiful Girls,” “Fire Burning” and “Take You There.”

He’s also made a name for himself with guest appearances on hits such as Natasha Bedingfield’s “Love Like This” and collaborations with Flo Rida, Baby Bash and Bun B.

STAGECOACH 2014: AXS TV will return to festival

The Stagecoach Country Music Festival will be broadcast again this spring.

Sets from the country music festival, scheduled for April 25-27 at the Empire Polo Club in Indio, will be aired on AXS TV.

Last year the cable network was the first to broadcast from the festival.

Eric Church, Jason Aldean and Luke Bryan are the headliners for the eighth year of the popular country music festival.

AXS will broadcast more than 12 hours of coverage during the weekend.

A broadcast of the 2013 Stagecoach Festival performances will air on Sunday, Feb. 9 at 5 p.m. pacific, in a program called “Best of Stagecoach 2013” with clips from Dwight Yoakam, Lonestar, Phil Vassar, Jeff Bridges and the Abiders, Thompson Square, Florida Georgia Line and Darius Rucker.
