COACHELLA 2014: How to get tickets, how much and a FAQ (UPDATED)

Get ready for Coachella 2014. Here’s what you need to know. (2013/File Photo)

UPDATE 4/6/2014: Want to get tickets to the sold-out 2014 Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival? Here are some tips, including a way to get an official pass that doesn’t involve a scalper. Also, don’t forget to check out the iGuide’s special Coachella section for the latest details.

So you saw that the 2014 Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival lineup was released and you’ve decided you want to shake it like a Polaroid picture when the OutKast reunion takes the stage at the Empire Polo Club in Indio this April.

How do you get tickets for Coachella 2014? We can help. Consider this your primer for your best chance of getting Coachella tickets.

When do Coachella 2014 tickets go on sale?
-UPDATE: Tickets for Coachella 2014 sold out in three hours. They had gone on sale at 10 a.m. Friday, Jan. 10 via Coachella.com and only through Coachella.com. If you have a buddy that tells you that you can get them on an aftermarket ticketing site, that’s not a guarantee that you’re getting a real ticket.

What do I have to do to buy tickets online?
Register on the Coachella ticketing site ahead of time. You will want to do this before 10 a.m. Friday. If you and a friend are both trying to get the tickets, you should both register. Doing this for the first time? Coachella has a walkthrough with pictures and everything.

When is the festival again?
-Weekend 1 is April 11-13 and weekend 2 is April 18-20. Coachella is already alerting folks that your ticket chances are better for weekend 2 and recommend registering for that.

How much are tickets?
-A general admission pass is $375 and a VIP pass is $799. Car and tent camping are $85 for either. A shuttle pass alone is $60 and a general admission with a shuttle pass is $435. VIP parking is $150. Again, the only GA option for weekend 1 is the $435 shuttle/GA pass combo.

But I REALLY want to go to Weekend 1? What are my options?
-General admission festival passes for Weekend 1 must be purchased as a shuttle combination and those are $435 ($375 for a ticket and $60 for the shuttle pass). Yes, that’s still the price even if you aren’t using the shuttle.

I’m broke. What about those payment plans?
-If you were banking on the layaway option, you’re out of luck–that only worked if you did the pre-sale last May.

OK. I signed up, I’ve got money and I’m ready to get my tickets. What now?
-Patience, grasshopper. Coachella draws nearly 200,000 people out to the Coachella Valley for those two weeks every year and since the fest has consistently sold out, lots of people are trying to log in and buy tickets at the same time.  Be patient at the 10 a.m. on-sale time tomorrow. Also, if you’re going with friends, it’s always good for multiple people to register and be prepared to purchase.

And in the meantime, keep hanging out here and read our award-winning Coachella coverage.

Riverside is going global with a show at Morgan’s Tavern on Friday night.

Originally hailing from Germany, Lord Bishop Rocks describes its sound as “Hendrixian Motör Funk.” If metallic umlauts and Jimi Hendrix don’t draw you in, what will?

The band is on tour with Badlands Bandits, a band from the United Kingdom, who will also perform at the show.

Plus, there is local support from some bands worthy of getting there early to see, including Teenage Exorcists, Spiral Sons and Danger, Inc.

9 p.m. Friday, Jan. 10, Morgan’s Tavern, 4850 Tyler St., Riverside, free, 21 and older only.

COACHELLA 2014: Lineup offers staples, gems and surprises

The 2014 Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival lineup has been released.

So far we’ve talked about the diversity of the 2014 Coachella Festival lineup and time traveled back to the 1990s with Beck and Fatboy Slim. Now it’s time take a closer look at the headliners, the reunions and some of the surprises lurking in the fine print.

The Headliners
After 15 editions of the festival, finding a new headliner is hard. Kudos to Goldenvoice for the .333 batting average this year. (That’s better than Frank Thomas and he was just voted into the Baseball Hall of Fame.)
-Is it just me, or does anyone else really wish that the OutKast reunion had stayed a secret? I’m still incredibly excited about the spectacle that Andre 3000 and Big Boi will bring, but I would have loved for this to be the big Coachella lineup surprise.
-Muse. They had cool lasers the last time they played and that was just as the group turned into an arena-ready act.
-Arcade Fire is always great, but they will have to do something huge to top the 2011 performance with the glowing LED balloons that descended on the crowd.

The Reunions
Coachella is famous for its reunions. (Ahem, Pixies, Rage Against the Machine, etc.) This year includes a really strong crop of them and that’s just at first glance.
-Neutral Milk Hotel was already doing reunion shows, but you know the NMH Coachella set (I’m going to go ahead and pick it as a sunset set for the Outdoor Theatre) might spawn a unicorn or something equally magical.

The Replacements have reunited. (Twin Tone Records/Contributed Image)

The Replacements have reunited. (Twin Tone Records/Contributed Image)

-RiotFest was a mere warm-up for The Replacements. They’re going to be even better at Coachella.
-The Afghan Whigs reunited two years ago. It’s about time they got to Coachella.
-I’m sad that Annette Funicello died because nothing would be sweeter at the Fishbone reunion than their performance of “Jamaica Ska.” (I’m completely serious, it would have been a Coachella moment.)

The Coachella Crowd-Pleaser
-The Knife is one of those bands that everybody talks about every year and since the Swedish duo isn’t known for its extensive tours, this is a get for Coachella and it seems to be the one thing that keeps coming up in nearly every Facebook post in my feed.

The Surprises
Every year, when some poor soul is forced to read me the lineup as I type furiously (in the case of this year, it was Charming Husband), there is always an act or two that make me stop and go “OOOOOH!” This year had a bunch of them.
-Bryan Ferry. Did anyone see that one coming? There’s always an elder statesman that gets his due (Leonard Cohen, Nick Cave), but I didn’t see it being Ferry.
-After the Pet Shop Boys had that show at the Shrine last year, I had an inkling that we might see them at Coachella, but just how many people that have messaged me about their excitement over this is surprising.
-Bad Manners! Coachella never disappoints in the classic ska act department.
-The Preservation Hall Jazz Band is more than a musical act, it’s an institution. Between this set and Trombone Shorty, N’awlins is coming to the desert.
-Even though Coachella leaked Motorhead as part of the lineup on Tuesday night, that booking is a pleasant surprise for those of us who also enjoyed when The Big 4 came to Indio.
-Gabba Gabba Heys. Not to be confused with Yo Gabba Gabba, which came to the fest a few years back, this is actually a Ramones cover band. Can’t say I predicted that one.

What surprised you on the lineup? Tell us below.

COACHELLA 2014: What do you think of the lineup?

What does the 2014 Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival lineup say to you? (2013/File Photo)

What does the 2014 Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival lineup say to you? (2013/File Photo)

The lineup for the 2014 Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival has been released and I’ve finally had a little bit of time to process it. Here’s my initial take on the 100+ artists we’ll see at the Empire Polo Club April 11-13 and April 18-20.

A lot of the longtime Coachella-goers I’ve talked to say that 2014 is the most diverse lineup the festival has had. When I think about the fact that I can see both Motorhead and the Preservation Hall Jazz Band this year, it certainly looks that way on the surface.

It doesn’t matter who Goldenvoice books for Coachella–there will always be the armchair promoters questioning and those who refuse to be satisfied until David Bowie decides to be Ziggy Stardust and actually abduct everyone from the polo fields.

At the same time, Coachella has consistently been a tastemaking festival, helping to launch acts like Amy Winehouse, The Killers and 2014 repeat guests MGMT.

RELATED: 10 Coachella 2014 artists that will take you back to the 1990s

And you can’t deny that the lineup is arguably the deepest of any of the major U.S. festivals. If people felt differently, there wouldn’t be so much hand-wringing and complaining about the set times every April.

I think that this is truly the music lover’s Coachella–where you’ll wander from Bryan Ferry to Ramones tribute band the Gabba Gabba Heys to The Glitch Mob to J. Roddy Walston and The Business.

Longtime Audio File reader Aracely Jarrell has attended Coachella every year and I think she wrapped it up best.

“I know I will be starting my Coachella conditioning ASAP because I will be walking many miles!” she said.

What do you think? Is this the most diverse Coachella ever? Let me know in the comments below.

Guess what? The Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival released the 2014 lineup tonight. If you’re looking for the quick answers, the festival is April 11-13 and April 18-20 at the Empire Polo Club in Indio. Tickets go on sale Friday, Jan. 10 at 10 a.m. and OutKast, Muse and Arcade Fire are headlining.

Here’s my quick take–the festival always draws from multiple decades, but this year the 1990s are back in style just like my Doc Martens and I have proof.

Friday’s has a solid batch of noteworthy ’90s acts:

Outkast is set to perform at the 2014 Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival. (AP)

1. OutKast
Just because the world caught on to the genius of OutKast with “Stankonia” in 2000, Andre 3000 and Big Boi were making minds melt years before. Here’s hoping we get some “ATLiens” love in their Friday night Coachella headlining set.

2. The Afghan Whigs
Once The Afghan Whigs announced that the members were reuniting, it was only a matter of time until Greg Dulli would walk back into my life with his angst and self-loathing (like a “My So-Called Life” episode written only for me). It only took two years for them to make it to Coachella. Can you think of a better band from Cincinnati? I can’t.

3.  Jon Spencer Blues Explosion
So wild. So freaky. So much theremin. The Jon Spencer Blues Explosion put its stamp on the 1990s with its psychedelic punk blues garage rock of awesome. Don’t believe me? Go listen to 1994’s “Orange.”

The 1990s continue to shine on Saturday’s lineup.

4. Queens of the Stone Age
While “Songs for the Deaf” brought Palm Desert native Josh Homme to the MTV crowd in the 21st century, the band’s self-titled album came out in the ’90s and most of “Rated R” was recorded before Y2K.

5. Fatboy Slim
Is there anything more ’90s than the choreographed dance scene to “The Rockafeller Skank” from the Freddie Prinze Jr. movie “She’s All That”? It’s the dance Usher taught us.

6. Mogwai
OK, now let’s get some street cred back with Mogwai, the Scottish post-punks who get weird and experimental and reserved and explosive all in one. They formed in the mid-1990s.

7. The Dismemberment Plan
I went to the final D-Plan show at the 9:30 Club in Washington, D.C. about a decade ago and I was insanely jealous when all of my friends back home went to the band’s first show back. I think one of the most important albums of the 1990s was The Dismemberment Plan’s “Emergency & I” and I plan to be up front and center for the band’s Coachella set.

Sunday takes us back one more time with some high-profile ’90s artists.

8. Beck
Beck was everywhere in the ’90s. In 1994,”Loser” brought his self-loathing alt-folk to radios and sparked the rise of one of the most important artistic influences of the next 10 years. However, the brilliance of the modern rock of “Odelay” in 1996 and the funky soul of 1999’s “Midnite Vultures” are what make Beck a top candidate for musician of the decade.

9. Neutral Milk Hotel
Every hipster is freaking out about the Neutral Milk Hotel reunion to begin with and they will cry when it happens in all of its beauty at Coachella. The quintessential album from the group is 1998’s “In the Aeroplane Over the Sea.”

10. Superchunk
Superchunk is one of the bands that defined 1990s indie rock. That’s pretty much all you need to know. Go to that set and pay your respects.

Update 11:05 p.m.: The prices for the various levels of tickets available have been updated below.

OutKast, Muse and Arcade Fire will headline the 2014 Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival, set for April 11-13 and April 18-20 at the Empire Polo Club in Indio.

Festival organizers released the lineup on Wednesday night.

Queens of the Stone Age, Lorde, Motorhead, Beck and more than 100 other acts make up the undercard of the festival, which started in 1999.

The festival added a sixth stage, the air-conditioned and enclosed Yuma Tent, in 2013.

Since expanding to two weekends in 2012, the festival attracts nearly 200,000 people to the Coachella Valley each year.

The popular festival has been a taste-making event that attracts celebrities and music fans from around the world.

Festival passes for both weekends go on sale Friday, January 10 at 10 a.m. pacific. General admission festival passes for Weekend 1 must be purchased as a shuttle combination. All pass types are available for Weekend 2. The price you see is the price you pay — prices reflect all fees included. Layaway is no longer an option for either weekend.

A general admission pass is $375 and a VIP pass is $799. Car and tent camping are $85 for either. A shuttle pass alone is $60 and a general admission with a shuttle pass is $435. VIP parking is $150.

COACHELLA 2014: Lineup gets metal with Motorhead

UPDATE: Full lineup announced; Arcade Fire, Outkast, Muse to headline

These official Coachella social media posts better not be toying with my emotions.

On Tuesday evening the official Coachella page posted a photo of a playing card depicting an ace of spades with the Coachella and Motorhead logos upon what I can only assume represents the grassy fields of the Empire Polo Club.

UM, MOTORHEAD IS PLAYING COACHELLA, GUYS!

The festival has been dropping clues about other artists performing, but until this Motorhead drop, nothing has been bigger than The Glitch Mob.

This is the most metal act I think the festival has ever booked (and yes, I am saying that Motorhead is more metal than Tool).

Reader Dan Thomas and I are also hopeful that this could lead to Iron Maiden one day headlining the festival.

And now, here are two of my favorite things together–“The Young Ones” and Motorhead.

So is this the most metal act Coachella has ever booked? Sound off in the comments below.

COACHELLA 2014: Lineup predictions with Childish Gambino and more

Childish Gambino (Contributed Image)

Childish Gambino (Contributed Image)

I just posted about Neko Case and Chromeo looking likely for the 2014 Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival, which is set for April 11-13 and April 18-20 at the Empire Polo Club in Indio, but new tour dates have led me to another pick.

Rapper Childish Gambino, who you might recognize as actor Donald Glover from “Community,” released some tour dates today, and Coachella is looking like a possibility.

He recently released a new project, “Because the Internet” and there’s a giant gap in his tour dates from April 3-29. He does have a Los Angeles date listed for May 3 at the Shrine, which is a venue that Goldenvoice, the promoter behind Coachella, has been booking. It’s not a lock, but it could definitely happen.

Also, thanks to Twitter follower @GarrettAMay for the tour date info and and colleague Timothy Guy for his prediction of Childish Gambino. (Tim also called Childish Gambino back in 2012 when he made his festival debut, too.)

In other updates, the Coachella social media platforms have continued to share some tidbits for artists that look very likely to appear at the festival.

Bombino, Factory Floor, Bonobo and Future Islands have all been linked to by the festival’s social media.

Want to know when the Coachella 2014 lineup will be released? I don’t have a crystal ball, but I do have historical data and charts.

COACHELLA 2014: Lineup predictions with Neko Case, Chromeo

Every day the buzz keeps building about the forthcoming 2014 Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival lineup.

The fest, which is set for the Empire Polo Club in Indio April 11-13 and April 18-20, traditionally announces its lineup in January after much wild speculation and careful Coachella prognostication. I like to consider these blogs part of the latter.

Up first today is Neko Case, who last appeared at the polo fields as a solo artist  for the inaugural Stagecoach Country Music Festival back in 2007.  Thanks to reader Nate Hutchinson for sending me a link to Case’s tour schedule.

Her tour that starts in January hits mostly the middle of the U.S. before she takes off for Australia and New Zealand.

Case’s U.S. tour resumes on April 12 in Tucson, Ariz. and then in Flagstaff on April 13, with no other dates listed.

Due to the big gap and the proximity of Arizona to California, I think it’s safe to say we will see her on April 11 and April 18 at Coachella 2014.

She’s been nominated for a Grammy and released a new album, “The Worse Things Get, The Harder I Fight, The Harder I Fight, The More I Love You,” in September.

Another group that looks likely for a return to Indio is Chromeo.

The electro duo is releasing new music this year and has some suspicious tour dates, much like Case. They are playing San Francisco April 12 and Portland, Ore. on April 14 and going up to Seattle before swinging back down to Phoenix on April 19.

Here’s Chromeo’s latest track, “Come Alive.”
