UPDATE: I am working on a story about Bill Bartell/Pat Fear.  We did get some information from the Riverside County Coroner’s office this morning. If you would like to share memories and/or photos, please contact me at vfranko@pe.com.

Since learning of the news of the death of Bill Bartell, better known as Pat Fear, an icon in the Inland music scene and founder of punk band White Flag, which started in Moreno Valley, friends and fans have been sharing condolences via social media.

Here’s a look at what some people are sharing:

Bill Bartell, better known as singer and guitarist Pat Fear of punk band White Flag, has died.

In the early 1980s White Flag sprang out of the then-unincorporated area of Sunnymead (now part of Moreno Valley), and took on the LA punk scene, releasing debut LP “S is for Space” in 1982. Bartell was one of the founding members of the group, which released more than 20 albums and has toured the world.

Talk to a number of people in the Inland music scene and White Flag still remains one of the top influences.

I’m still gathering details about Bartell’s death and will update when I confirm more. I’ve been told by a few folks that he was in declining health. Please share your memories of Pat Fear in the comments section. Also, here’s a great piece that Vice did on White Flag a little while ago.

Don’t call it a comeback, Cher’s been here for decades, even if she hasn’t been touring lately.

However, the singer, who has had a number one hit in each of the last six decades, is going back on the road in 2014 and one of the stops is Citizens Business Bank Arena in Ontario in July .

Cher, who made a singular name popular in music long before Madonna writhed around in a wedding dress, will come to the Inland Empire on Saturday, July 5, 2014 in Ontario.

Tickets go on sale at noon on Friday, Oct.4, with the pre-sale starting Wednesday, Oct. 2. Tickets will be $25.50 to $131.00, before fees. And when you purchase a ticket, you get her new CD “Closer To The Truth.”

Tickets will be available over at www.axs.com.

Tickets for another big show at the arena go on sale Oct. 4, too–Lady Antebellum’s March 15, 2014 concert.

Even though Cher seems to defy the passage of time, here’s a blast from the past with “If I Could Turn Back Time.”

MUSIC: Sammy Hagar releases new album

Fontana’s own Sammy Hagar has released a new album, “Sammy Hagar & Friends,” which features the Red Rocker and, you guessed it, his friends.

Again, I maintain that nobody is having more fun in rock ‘n’ roll than Hagar, as evidenced by his further transformation into the Jimmy Buffett of the West.  Like Buffett, he’s become more than a mere musicians, an entrepreneur with restaurants and his own brands of rum and tequila. Plus,  Hagar covers “Margaritaville” with Toby Keith on the new record.

Here’s Sammy to talk about it in his own words.

There are some new songs, plus some covers. He even performs with some of his old Montrose cohorts.

Also, he covers Depeche Mode’s “Personal Jesus” with Neal Schon, Chad Smith and Michael Anthony.

And if you missed it earlier this summer, Hagar has a video of him being honored by his hometown of Fontana.

NOCTURNAL WONDERLAND: Festival showers San Manuel Amphitheater with color

Before even entering the grounds of San Manuel Amphitheater, Nocturnal Wonderland was a kaleidoscope of color.  The tens of thousands of attendees came wearing rainbow tutus and flower crowns,  eyes bedazzled with sparkling jewels. They lit up the night with glow sticks and flashing LED accessories, wrists covered in kandi, the name for homemade multicolored beaded bracelets popular with ravers.

Inside the grounds, multicolored laser lights shone from five stages as the masses, costumed and not, danced inside the Devore venue re-imagined into an electronic dance music playground out of “Alice in Wonderland” to artists such as Porter Robinson and Sander Van Doorn.

Aaron Calderon, of Buena Park, compared the festival to a modern Woodstock, with “good music and a lot of good vibes.”

Nocturnal Wonderland is the longest running festival of mammoth electronic music promoter Insomniac Events, and was often held at the National Orange Show Events Center in San Bernardino. The event was Insomniac’s second on the grounds.

If you’ve ever been to a show at the amphitheater, this is nothing like it. The main amphitheater isn’t even used, sitting dark and blocked off.  The five stages are set up on the grounds outside of it.

Up on the venue’s massive lawn, where thousands of Iron Maiden fans banged their heads earlier this month, a giant stage was erected, with Nocturnal’s mascot, Owlie, built in the center of the area known as the Sunken Garden, presiding over the DJs below. Owlie opened his eyes to reveal hypnotic lights while two giant mushroom sculptures changed colors on either side of the stage.

Another large stage, the Labyrinth, was set up opposite a Ferris Wheel and mechanical swings, and featured a tree with eyes in the middle of the stage, with and large teapots flanking it and lanterns above while artists like Fedde le Grand Fedde le Grand spun on the stage below.

The wild visuals are among the festival’s attractions.

“It’s like you’re getting away from reality,” said Janet Rosas, a Loma Linda resident.

For Jess Guido, who grew up in Riverside and recently returned from teaching English abroad in China, Nocturnal Wonderland represented freedom of expression and music after living in a country where censorship is the norm.

“This is what I missed the most,” she said.

On Saturday, Sept. 21 I ventured out to Nocturnal Wonderland at San Manuel Amphitheater in Devore.

One of the things that struck me was how many people wanted their picture taken. When I’m out and about people are usually ducking the camera. So for all of you nice people who kept asking for me to take your picture, here you go!

I have a full photo gallery of Nocturnal Wonderland posted over at PE.com, but I wanted to share some other images I captured that didn’t make the original gallery. These shots are from my iPhone, iPad and my DSLR.

Nocturnal Wonderland celebrated a new home at San Manuel Amphitheater in Devore with tens of thousands of electronic music fans on Saturday, Sept. 21.

The festival included sets from Fedde le Grand, Porter Robinson, Sander Van Doorn and more.

Five stages pumped heavy beats, carnival rides whirred in the night and there was a pyrotechnics show that rivaled that of Disneyland.

Stay tuned for more notes from the fest, but take a look at our photo gallery from Nocturnal Wonderland or click the photo below to see it.
