Riverside’s Alien Ant Farm has been on tour all summer long and they’re playing homecoming show at M15 in Corona on Saturday, Sept. 7. And not only will Ant Farm be playing, but P.O.D. is also on the bill.

Alien Ant Farm has been working on their new album, “Always and Forever,” while they’ve been on the road with Fuel and Hoobastank this summer.  (On my recent vacation, I happened to catch a last-minute show in Nashville, Tenn., where I heard the band play new song “Let ‘Em Know” live for the first time and it sounded fantastic. Also, Aaron Lee, of Aaron Lee and the Love Vigilantes, a Riverside band that moved to Nashville  earlier this year, joined Ant Farm for “Attitude.” It was a fun show.)

Check out the video for Alien Ant Farm’s “Let ‘Em Know.” There’s some NSFW language in the song, but you can see some Riverside sights in the clip.

San Diego’s P.O.D. was last in the area when they headlined X103.9’s Merry Meltdown last December.  They recently released a new album, “Murdered Love.”

The show is being put on by X103.9 and tickets are on sale now. They’re $20 in advance and $25 at the door. You have to be 21 or older to go to the show.

Tickets are available at www.m15concerts.com.

Local music is really important. Right now, the Inland Empire has an incredibly deep talent pool of musicians.

One of my favorite parts of this job is being able to showcase some of them. I’m barely scratching the surface, but since re-launching PE Live this spring, we’ve featured more than 20 Inland artists, with exclusive interviews and performances.

Now, you don’t have to go hunting for the videos. Sign up for the PE Live  newsletter and you can get the latest videos delivered straight to your inbox.

I promise not to spam you, either. It’s just a weekly email with the latest in PE Live.

Visit http://subscribe.pe.com/pelive to sign up. All it takes is an email address.

I really believe in this project and I want to get our local artists out to as many people as possible. Please sign up and tell a friend or two.

REDLANDS: 6 things I learned from David Lowery

This morning I had the chance to talk to David Lowery, acclaimed musician and singer known for his work in Camper Van Beethoven and Cracker, lecturer at the Terry College of Business at the University of Georgia and a Redlands native, about the upcoming Cracker/Camper Van Beethoven Campout and more.

The Campout is celebrating its ninth year at Pappy & Harriet’s in Pioneertown Sept. 12-14.

I really love when interviews are more like conversations and this was one of those.  Here are a few of the interesting things I learned from talking with Lowery this morning:

1. Lowery’s  first concert was 1974’s Cal Jam at the now-defunct Ontario Motor Speedway. Cal Jam had an eclectic mix of artists on the bill, including Black Sabbath, the Eagles and Earth, Wind and Fire.  He also attended Cal Jam II in 1978, which included a set from Ted Nugent.

2. One of the first shows Lowery saw at the also defunct Swing Auditorium in San Bernardino was The Ramones. They had bottles thrown at them when they opened for Blue Oyster Cult.

3. Former Cracker member (and current Elvis Costello and The Imposters bassist) Davey Faragher is from Redlands, like Lowery and Cracker guitarist Johnny Hickman. However, Lowery and Faragher didn’t meet until Faragher recorded backing vocals on Camper Van Beethoven records. Also, Faragher’s country band, Jack… (expletive deleted so I can keep my job) is playing the Campout.

4. One of Lowery’s most prized possessions was a handwritten letter from Paul Williams.

Williams is a spectacular songwriter of classics such as Muppet staple  “Rainbow Connection” and Three Dog Night’s “An Old Fashioned Love Song. ” He also appears on the new Daft Punk’s “Random Access Memories” on the track “Touch.”

Cracker covered one of his songs, The Carpenters’ “Rainy Days and Mondays,” and Williams wrote the band a  letter complementing their version.  The band had it framed and it was on the wall of the studio until someone stole it.

5. Lowery thinks the next Cracker record will be in the direction of country-rock.

6. Camper Van Beethoven recently played the Outside Lands Festival in San Francisco. Camper booked some time to record a couple of songs in the studio around the festival. They also had a day of writing, during which they came up with a few more songs.

Thanks to David for being so generous with his time today on his drive back to Athens.

Stay tuned for a story about the ninth Cracker/Camper Van Beethoven Campout in the coming weeks, but you should know that the show includes some fantastic groups, including The Dangers, Gram Rabbit and many more members of the Cracker/Camper family.  Tickets are $68 for all three days and $27 for single-day passes. They’re available at www.pitchatent.com and you can get more information on the show at the Pappy & Harriet’s website.

I just want to throw this out there–how great would it be to see Camper Van Beethoven at the 2014 Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival? They have a new album, they helped define what would become alternative music. And with Cracker going country rock, they could play the 2014 Stagecoach Country Music Festival. I’m thinking the Palomino Tent would be perfect.

And on that note, I remember the first festival I ever saw Cracker at, the beloved HFStival at RFK stadium back in 1996. “Euro-Trash Girl” is still one of my favorites.

RIVERSIDE: Devo posts about Raincross Square show

Devo played Riverside’s Raincross Square in the 1980s.

Back in the day, Riverside was a legitimate touring stop for bands, something that new wave pioneers Devo are celebrating today.

The band posted a “This day in Devo history” type post on its Twitter page today about a show 33 years ago at Raincross Square in Riverside.

Random tidbit: there was riot at a Devo show at that venue. As I’ve been told, Devo was supposed to play two shows, but the second show was canceled and a riot ensued.

P-E Staff Photographer Kurt Miller said that the canceled show was made up not too long after at the same venue.

Is this that second show that was canceled? (I went to go search in our archives, but with the move they’re not easily accessible to me right now).

Were you at the show?

(Hat tips to Patrick Maloney and Rick Damigella for sending the link my way today.)

Since the relaunch of PE Live earlier this year, we’ve had so many talented local musicians come in and perform and sit down and talk with me about their music. (Don’t forget to sign up for our brand new weekly PE Live newsletter where you can get the videos delivered straight to your inbox!)

This week we reached our 20th artist–the incredibly talented ladies of The Jezebelles. With members from all over the Inland Empire, the group started performing cover songs three years ago. As the group evolved, they started writing their own original music.

Now the group has a brand new EP, which was funded by fans, and produced by Alien Ant Farm’s Mike Cosgrove.

Watch the video below to hear The Jezebelles talk about the genesis of the group and keep watching to hear two of those original songs.

The Jezebelles have two upcoming shows–one in Riverside on Aug. 23 and one at the House of Blues in Anaheim on Aug. 25. Get more details on the shows over at the iGuide.

Here’s a look at some behind the scenes photos from the PE Live shoot.
