PE LIVE: The Dangers get sweet with “Flowers and Trees”

We’ll have the next edition of PE Live out on Thursday (we filmed it at ProAbition with Naive Thieves a couple of weeks ago), but here’s another great video from the session we did with The Dangers.

The song, “Flowers and Trees,” features bassist Tim Loughlin on vocals. Songwriter Chris LeRoy penned the tune after meeting a couple at one of the band’s shows that had decided to get married after the husband was in the hospital (he’s fine now). The sweet love story inspired the song.

The Dangers will be playing a charity show on  Saturday, Dec. 14 at Studio in Redlands. The BellRays, Mark Nemetz & the Novas, Bob and Lisa, The Conditionz, The Sedans and Dust on the Radio are coming together for an all-star show.

Visit The Dangers’ page on Facebook for more information.

PE LIVE: Happy Thanksgiving from PE Live

PE_LIVE-620x389 (1)

Happy Thanksgiving! Because of the holiday we won’t have a traditional PE Live video this week, but I did put a little video together about the 30-plus local artists who have made time to answer my questions and perform for us.

Thank you to everyone who has participated, thank you to everyone who has watched a PE Live video and thank you to everyone who has helped make our little show about local music possible–the Press-Enterprise staff, videographers Matt Schoenmann, Angel Ortiz and Pep Fernandez, Cory and Robert at Hangar 24 and the iGuide team.

If you haven’t seen PE Live or you missed one of the artists, you can watch all of the videos over at the PE Live video page.

Have a safe and happy Thanksgiving and come back next Thursday for our PE Live session with Naive Thieves shot at ProAbition in Riverside. You can get a sneak peek at the videos if you sign up for our PE Live newsletter.

Visit http://subscribe.pe.com/pelive to sign up. All it takes is an email address. Or, you can fill out the form below.

Every family has its own holiday traditions and Riverside’s long-running ska band The Debonaires is no exception.

Each year, the band hosts a big show the night before Thanksgiving where new friends and old get together and celebrate some of the best in Inland music.

The Debonaires will headline the night of entertainment and there will also be sets from Quitapenas and Summer Twins.

Quitapenas was recently featured in the Wall Street Journal’s music blog and was also a guest on PE Live a couple of months back.

Watch an interview with Quitapenas.

Summer Twins, formed by sisters Chelsea and Justine Brown, also stopped by PE Live earlier this year.

Watch Summer Twins perform “I Don’t Care.”

The doors open at 8 p.m. The admission charge is $5 before 9 p.m. and $10 after.

Wednesday, Nov. 27, Mission Tobacco Lounge, 3630 University Ave., Riverside, 21 and older only.

PE LIVE: The Dangers give goosebumps with “My Someday”

When The Dangers first sent the new album “Gold!!” my way I was impressed by every track, but none more so than the album closer “My Someday.”

Bandleader Chris LeRoy had written the song a few years back and never really had the right place for it. But when Lisa Kekaula, of The BellRays, Bob & Lisa and Lisa and the Lips, joined The Dangers on the new album, he knew the powerful Riverside vocalist had the voice for the song.

LeRoy said that Kekaula and Dangers guitarist Bob Vennum (who is also a member of The BellRays, Bob & Lisa and Lisa and the Lips) had been touring in Australia with The BellRays and when they returned home, Kekaula had barely regained her voice after losing it on tour.

When she recorded the vocal track for “My Someday,” the original intent was to go back and fix it once she regained her voice, but LeRoy loved the vocal and it’s powerful vulnerability so much that the original take is what’s on the album.

I’ve listened to this song dozens of times and it never fails to give me goosebumps.  I’m over the moon that we were able to capture it for PE Live when The Dangers played a rollicking set at Hangar 24 in Redlands a couple of weeks back. Right around the 2:45 mark is where the song truly takes flight for me and it was serendipitous that background singers Ralph Torres and Pammy Farragher were in the audience and added that extra oomph to the song.

In the decade-plus that the great Hobo Jazz has been together, the band had not released a video, until now.

Check out the beautiful cinematography, beautiful music and beautiful story in Hobo Jazz’s video for “Bonnie,” which was directed by Lei Tao.

The song is available on their latest album, “The Curse of Tramp Life.”

The poignant song is only part of the Hobo Jazz story. Get to know the magic of the Hobos by watching our interview with Marquis and Matt from Hobo Jazz on a recent edition of PE Live.

The rumors and predictions of who will be playing the 2014 Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival are already out in the ether as bands such as Arcade Fire and Mogwai have announced their touring schedules through the spring and have conspicuous holes around April 11-13 and April 18-20, when the festival returns to the Empire Polo Club in Indio.

Vanessa Franko will be chatting live, answering your questions, and responding to comments about all things Coachella at 5:45 p.m. Thursday on PE.com.

For the last few years, I’ve been doing my Coachella prognostication, which I call Coachellaology, and every year it seems to be growing with more tips from fantastic readers and music fans like you.

On Thursday, Nov. 21 at 5:45 p.m. Pacific, let’s get together and talk about Coachella, from the probability of Daft Punk showing up to what the reunion acts will be this year.

What I think will make this so much fun is audience participation. You’re encouraged to send in questions, comments and more. Our interactive show gives you an opportunity to voice your Coachella knowledge.

If you’d like to chat or ask questions, please click on the widget to open a new window to participate in the live chat. Feel free to ask questions and add comments before we go live on Nov. 21, too.

You can also access the Coachella live chat directly at the Spreecast site.

Even if you can’t make it for the live chat, you can ask a question and watch it later. I’m hoping we can make this a semi-regular thing in the coming weeks and months as we go on the road to Coachella.

If you just found your way to the Audio File for the first time, welcome!
