A Taste of Coachella ’09: The Airborne Toxic Event

The Airborne Toxic Event is from L.A. and really, really good. Here they are doing “Sometime Around Midnight” on Letterman.

Singer Mikel Jollett lived and worked on a horse farm in the high desert for a while when he was working on his first novel and before the events that started the band.

Jollett said he’s psyched to play Coachella and is really looking forward to seeing Leonard Cohen.

Aren’t we all?

A Taste of Coachella 2009: Thenewno2

Last week I had a chance to talk with Dhani Harrison and Oli Hecks, of thenewno2.

They were both great and it turns out Dhani got his puppy from a breeder in Riverside.

Growing up as friends in England, the pair discovered they both learned how to play guitar and drums by listening to Led Zeppelin and after years of jamming out, decided to make their own music.

The result is the full LP “You Are Here,” which is one of the most interesting albums I’ve heard in a while. If you pick it up, it’s definitely a headphones kind of record–but not earbuds, you need real big headphones for it.

Harrison and Hecks both hope the record gets people thinking for themselves. I have a full interview/story coming soon with tales of unofficial bandmate Wilson the broom, how you turn an album made on laptops into a live show and what’s up with The Beatles’ “Rock Band.” Yes, Harrison is related to THAT Harrison.

Coachella fest on ‘California’s Gold,’ adds iPhone application

The Press-Enterprise/Rodrigo Pena
Huell Howser, host of “California’s Gold,” will get all GOLLLLL-LLLY on Coachella in a new episode tonight.

You know, I wasn’t overheated and losing my mind when I thought I saw Huell Howser of “California’s Gold” at Coachella last year. That WAS him, shooting an episode that airs tonight on KVCR at 8 p.m.

In the L.A. area/greater SoCal, it will air on KCET on April 5 at 7 p.m. and April 11 at 7 p.m.

Also, my BlackBerry has iPhone envy. There’s now a Coachella app for the iPhone.

It’s all free and the set times will be activated when they’re released.

M. Ward’s Inland ties and Coachella dreams

Special to The Press-Enterprise
M. Ward will play Coachella on Friday, April 17, but this won’t be his first time visiting the Inland.

I love when I’m doing an interview with an artist who’s not a local and I end up finding out a connection to the I.E.

It’s even cooler when said artist is M. Ward, who I think is just a really brilliant songwriter and makes music that will last for generations. His new CD, “Hold Time,” is one of my favorites of the year.

Anyway, the Inland connection–it turns out M. Ward, who is known offstage as Matt, had a grandfather who lived in Perris and has fond memories of the area.

“I spent a lot of time in Perris growing up, eating delicious Mexican food,” he said.

He also spent a lot of time in Temecula and he’s a big fan of Joshua Tree and is looking forward to his upcoming performance at Coachella so he can get back to the area. (He lives in Portland, Ore.).

Speaking of Coachella, Matt said he’s going to be playing on the second stage, where Leonard Cohen is playing the magical dusk set on Friday, April 17, and he’s going to hang around there all day to see if he can meet him.

Also, being a big Beatles fan and influenced by the Fab Four, he’s extremely excited about seeing Paul McCartney.

That’s actually how I’d like to spend my Friday at Coachella, trying to meet Leonard Cohen and waiting to see Paul McCartney, hanging out with M. Ward.

In actuality it will probably be more like trying to meet David Hasselhoff and waiting to see Paul McCartney from the back of the crowd, Tweeting away.

Speaking of Twitter, you can now follow me on Twitter and get music updates even faster! Just go to twitter.com/pecom_audiofile and click follow. It’s that easy.

Anyway, here’s M. Ward doing my favorite track off his new album. It’s called “Never Had Nobody Like You.” Sorry for the visuals, but the sound quality was better than others out there.

Coachella sunset sets revealed

Coachella founder Paul Tollett was on KCRW last week and he played some tunes (and like me, he digs Los Campesinos!) and talked about the festival.

I FINALLY had a chance to listen to it and discovered that he revealed the second stage sunset sets–that ethereal perfect moment in the mountains. If you’ve never been to Coachella and this will be your first time, definitely check out one of these sets.

Friday- Leonard Cohen (One word: MAGICAL)

Saturday- Fleet Foxes

Sunday- Paul Weller

How incredible? So incredible.

Single-day Coachella passes sold out for Friday

Planning to swing into Indio to catch Paul McCartney on April 17 at the Coachella Valley music and Arts Festival?

Prepare to shell out more cash.

The allotment of $99 Friday single-day tickets for the annual festival have sold out, a spokesperson for the festival said.

However, those itching to see a former Beatle can get a three-day pass for $269 plus fees. There are also single-day passes for Saturday and Sunday at $99 per day available.

The festival, in its tenth year, offers more than 120 bands from all genres playing at the Empire Polo Field over the weekend of April 17 to 19.

Friday’s performers include McCartney, Leonard Cohen, Morrissey and Franz Ferdinand.

Saturday’s lineup includes the Killers and M.I.A. and The Cure and My Bloody Valentine will perform on Sunday.

You can pick up tickets in the meantime at Ticketmaster or through the Coachella Web site.

Coachella promoters announce All Points West lineup

Last year, a festival I like to think of as “Coachella East” opened its three-day stint with Radiohead. The All Points West Festival, which is at Liberty State Park in New Jersey, is back again from July 31-Aug. 2. It’s put on in part by Goldenvoice/AEG Live.

Now they have fewer bands, but I have to say, the Beastie Boys are a big grab. A lot of current Coachella artists and Coachella vets, but a lot of comedians.

For your perusal. Do you like it better than the Coachella lineup?

Friday, July 31: Beastie Boys, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Vampire Weekend, The National, Fleet Foxes, MSTRKRFT, Q-Tip, The Pharcyde, Organized Konfusion, The Knux, Ra Ra Riot, Seasick Steve, Telepathe, Shearwater, Heartless Bastards, Flying Lotus, College Humor Live, Arj Barker, Eugene Mirman and Bo Burnham.

Saturday, August 1: Tool, My Bloody Valentine, Gogol Bordello, Arctic Monkeys, Neko Case, The Ting Tings, Yelle, Crystal Castles, St. Vincent, Tokyo Police Club, The Cool Kids, Kool Keith, Cage the Elephant, Chairlift, White Rabbits, Electric Touch, The Postelles, Black Gold, College Humor Live, Tim & Eric, Judah Friedlander and Jim Jeffries.
