Coachella sunset sets revealed

Coachella founder Paul Tollett was on KCRW last week and he played some tunes (and like me, he digs Los Campesinos!) and talked about the festival.

I FINALLY had a chance to listen to it and discovered that he revealed the second stage sunset sets–that ethereal perfect moment in the mountains. If you’ve never been to Coachella and this will be your first time, definitely check out one of these sets.

Friday- Leonard Cohen (One word: MAGICAL)

Saturday- Fleet Foxes

Sunday- Paul Weller

How incredible? So incredible.

Single-day Coachella passes sold out for Friday

Planning to swing into Indio to catch Paul McCartney on April 17 at the Coachella Valley music and Arts Festival?

Prepare to shell out more cash.

The allotment of $99 Friday single-day tickets for the annual festival have sold out, a spokesperson for the festival said.

However, those itching to see a former Beatle can get a three-day pass for $269 plus fees. There are also single-day passes for Saturday and Sunday at $99 per day available.

The festival, in its tenth year, offers more than 120 bands from all genres playing at the Empire Polo Field over the weekend of April 17 to 19.

Friday’s performers include McCartney, Leonard Cohen, Morrissey and Franz Ferdinand.

Saturday’s lineup includes the Killers and M.I.A. and The Cure and My Bloody Valentine will perform on Sunday.

You can pick up tickets in the meantime at Ticketmaster or through the Coachella Web site.

Coachella promoters announce All Points West lineup

Last year, a festival I like to think of as “Coachella East” opened its three-day stint with Radiohead. The All Points West Festival, which is at Liberty State Park in New Jersey, is back again from July 31-Aug. 2. It’s put on in part by Goldenvoice/AEG Live.

Now they have fewer bands, but I have to say, the Beastie Boys are a big grab. A lot of current Coachella artists and Coachella vets, but a lot of comedians.

For your perusal. Do you like it better than the Coachella lineup?

Friday, July 31: Beastie Boys, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Vampire Weekend, The National, Fleet Foxes, MSTRKRFT, Q-Tip, The Pharcyde, Organized Konfusion, The Knux, Ra Ra Riot, Seasick Steve, Telepathe, Shearwater, Heartless Bastards, Flying Lotus, College Humor Live, Arj Barker, Eugene Mirman and Bo Burnham.

Saturday, August 1: Tool, My Bloody Valentine, Gogol Bordello, Arctic Monkeys, Neko Case, The Ting Tings, Yelle, Crystal Castles, St. Vincent, Tokyo Police Club, The Cool Kids, Kool Keith, Cage the Elephant, Chairlift, White Rabbits, Electric Touch, The Postelles, Black Gold, College Humor Live, Tim & Eric, Judah Friedlander and Jim Jeffries.

Sunday, August 2: Coldplay, Echo & The Bunnymen, MGMT, The Black Keys, Elbow, Silversun Pickups, Mogwai, We Are Scientists, Ghostland Observatory, The Gaslight Anthem, Etienne De Crecy, Lykke Li, Akron/Family, Steel Train, Kitty, Daisy & Lewis, College Humor Live, Janeane Garofalo, Michael Showalter and Todd Barry.

Coachella rumor mill: The Stone Roses

Apparently The Stone Roses are getting back together, according to British tabloid the Daily Mirror.

There is a mention of a summer tour and a possible U.S. date, which of course everyone thinks is Coachella.

The Coachella Twitter has not confirmed anything yet, and nothing on the Coachella site.

When I talked to head booker and Coachella founder Paul Tollett last week, he said they were looking into possible replacements for Amy Winehouse, who left the bill last week, but that they weren’t going to force anything.

But a Stone Roses fan site says that there are other commitments for the band this summer.

I think the Stone Roses reunion would be right up Coachella’s alley, if there is truth to this rumor.

In the meantime, enjoy “Fool’s Gold.”

A Taste of Coachella ’09: The Hold Steady

One of the acts I’m most looking forward to at Coachella is The Hold Steady. They just rock. Guitarist Tad Kubler was nice enough to talk to me a couple of weeks ago and the story is in today’s Guide.

He’s planning to hang out for a few days in the desert for Coachella and the band is excited about the gig.

“The only thing about festivals is that you need to get down to business,” he said.

You might be able to spot him in the crowd, too. A photographer, Kubler recently shot Leonard Cohen for Rolling Stone magazine. He joked that he would be the guy at the show with all the cameras around his neck.

The band is already working on its next album, a follow up to 2008’s “Stay Positive.” He said that although it’s really early, the material he’s working on so far sounds really different and doesn’t include electric guitars.

And the band doesn’t mind writing on tour and the band will often try out new songs during sound check.

“It’s fun to write on the road because you can be inspired by the places and people you meet,” Kubler said.

Anyway, in case you haven’t seen them, check out The Hold Steady’s performance of “Stuck Between Stations” on David Letterman’s show.

Coachella goes digital, adds more acts

Special to The Press-Enterprise
Devendra Banhart gives the thumbs up to his addition to the 2009 Coachella Valley Music & Arts Festival. His addition was announced in the new Coachella Digital magazine.

So since it’s apparently Coachella Monday in my world, it’s time to tell you about a really, really cool new thing that they’re doing. It’s a digital magazine dedicated to Coachella and cool things that fans of Coachella will like.

Check it out.

I love that they have a feature on I Love Spicy Pie, the vendors who always sell pizza at the festival.

Plus, there’s an announcement with even more bands. The Chemical Brothers will be doing a DJ set, The Orb, Etienne de Crecy, folkie Devendra Banhart and punk rockers Murder City Devils.

Also, we know who will be spinning in the Dome–you know that giant half-orb in the field? Well, Flying Lotus, The Bomb Squad, Kode 9, Daedulus, The Professionals, 6 Blocc, Daddy Kev & Nocando, Gaslamp Killer vs. DLX, Ras G & Samiyam and MC Kemst.

Prince sends out a message to fans

The Associated Press
Say what? Prince announced something today, but it only makes sense if you know how to decode text messages from a 13-year-old.

Let’s forget about the whole Amy Winehouse canceling on Coachella thing for a moment and revisit Coachella 2008, when Prince became the Saturday night headliner.

The Purple One issued a statement today which makes my head kind of spin and I wonder if Prince actually sent it or if it was a 13-year-old texting on a bedazzled phone. Anyway, here it is:

Calling all Purpleheadz: ready 2 get plugged in?

From the 24th on, there will b a slew of NPG-related events happening around electric LAlaland.. we don’t want 2 give away all the details yet, but b prepared 2 get yo groove on, numerous ways 4 numerous days. We know $ is tite but the adventures will b worth ur while! Stay 2ned 2 this outtaspacestation.

I think this means he’s coming to L.A. and it will be a cheap show and we can dance with Prince to “Raspberry Beret.” Yeah, that’s what I’m getting out of it.
