Country star Blake Shelton, who is  famous not only for his music, but  for his role in a spinning chair on “The Voice,” will come to San Manuel Amphitheater in Devore in October.

Shelton, who is married to fellow country songstress Miranda Lambert, will perform at the venue on Sunday, Oct. 5.

The last time Shelton played in the two-county area was when he and Lambert co-headlined a night at the 2012 Stagecoach Country Music Festival.

Shelton won’t be joined by his spouse for this show, but The Band Perry, Neal McCoy and Dan + Shay will be on the bill.

Tickets for the show go on sale to the general public at 10 a.m. Friday, April 4. They are available through www.livenation.com or by calling 800-745-3000 and are priced from $25 to $54.75, before fees.

SAN BERNARDINO: Prepare for Iron Maiden traffic

Headed to The Battle of San Bernardino with Iron Maiden on Friday? You might want to plan on getting there early.

San Manuel Amphitheater operator Live Nation is already warning that the fest is going to cause insane traffic delays (and if you know how much the Inland Empire loves metal, especially Iron Maiden, you know the threat is real). The parking lots and box office will open at 10 a.m. Gates open at 1 p.m. and the music starts at 2 p.m.

(Also, the music is going to start on the concourse with Overkill and Warbringer at 2 p.m. I’m imagining getting a pretzel and headbanging with Overkill right now.)

Live Nation is offering deals as a “get there early” incentive. There will be a “3 Before 3” promotion at at the venue’s concession booths where you can hot dogs, small sodas and water will be available for $3 each between 1 and 3 p.m.

RELATED: Interview with Iron Maiden

However, you aren’t a (power)slave to the concession stands. You can bring in your own water (in individual sealed bottles up to 20 ounces) for the show. They will take the caps off when you enter. Multiple bottles are allowed within reason, but don’t try to smuggle in a 12-pack. They also can’t be frozen.

Food is allowed if you bring it in a one-gallon, clear plastic bag.

You can bring in sunblock (lotion only), matches and personal still photo cameras.

There are a bunch of things you can’t bring in, though. Here’s the list:

  • No water bottles larger than one gallon
  • No 12 or 24-Packs of water
  • No frozen water bottles
  • No lawn chairs
  • No blankets
  • No lighters
  • No ice chests or coolers
  • No spray-on sunblock
  • No backpacks
  • No camel packs
  • No fireworks
  • No bottles or cans
  • No umbrellas
  • No stickers
  • No pets
  • No laser pointers
  • No audio or video recording devices
  • No professional photo cameras (nothingwith a detachable lens)
  • No weapons
  • No pepper spray
  • No large metal keychains or wallet chains
  • No sharp or spiked accessories
  • No skateboards
  • No tailgating

Beware, if you are coming up on the 215, there is construction on the Devore Road exit.

The Rock the Bells festival, which heads to San Manuel Amphitheater in Devore on Sept. 7 and 8, has announced a final round of artist additions as well as single-day tickets.

The festival, which is celebrating its 10th anniversary, has added supergroup A$AP Mob (featuring A$AP Rocky, A$AP Ferg, A$AP Ant, A$AP Twelvy and A$AP Nast), Joey Bad… and Pro Era, Stalley, Young Dirty … and The Internet to all of the shows.

The San Bernardino festival dates, which are the Los Angeles area shows, will also include Trinidad James and Action Bronson.

Other performers already announced for the show include Wu-Tang Clan, Jurassic 5, Kid Cudi and more.

The festival has also announced single-day tickets. You can see the individual lineup dates for the San Bernardino show at the Rock the Bells website. Single-day tickets for San Manuel Amphitheater will be $89 each, plus fees, until Aug. 18, when the prices go up to $99 each. For VIP, tickets are listed at $189 per day. A two-day general admission pass is $165 and a two-day VIP pass is $399.

One of the other big things about this year’s Rock the Bells is the holograms that will be on stage. While the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival brought hip-hop legend Tupac Shakur back to life with Dre and Snoop back in 2012, Rock the Bells is doubling the hologram fun.

Eazy-E will be with Bone Thugs-N-Harmony on Sept. 7 and O.D.B. will join Wu-Tang Clan on Sept. 8, but at first there reports of hologram rights issues.

Rock the Bells founder Chang Weisberg said this in the press release:
Despite initial reports of problems with rights clearances, I’m very pleased to announce that the estates are both 100 percent on board. Furthermore, not only are the families on board with the virtual performances, they are actually participating with the creation of them. This ensures the authenticity and integrity of the performances. It’s a monumental moment for music and technology that Eazy’s and ODB’s children have lent their DNA to these historic performances. Their bodies, faces, and voices have been captured to help recreate their fathers’ avatars. The process has been extremely rewarding to say the least. Seeing family members honoring their fathers in such a unique way has been incredible to witness.

There’s also a really cool contest the festival is running to give a winner in every market (Los Angeles, San Francisco, Washington D.C. and New York) a prize that includes seeing the soundcheck for the virtual performances of O.D.B. and Eazy-E. (The winners also get a pair of two-day passes and hotel accommodations for the weekend. You can enter at www.rockthebells.net/contests.)

Last week I wrote a bit about what the Insomniac/Live Nation deal means for the Inland Empire. This week, we’ll see that relationship in action.

Tickets go on sale at noon on Thursday, June 27 for Insomniac’s Nocturnal Wonderland at San Manuel Amphitheater in Devore.

Insomniac’s long-running electronic dance music festival, which has been held previously at the National Orange Show in San Bernardino, will go off Saturday, Sept. 21 from 3 pm. to 2 a.m. at the amphitheater and its grounds in Glen Helen Regional Park.

Tickets are $65-$85, before fees. After fees, the totals come to $79.50 and $101.70. Tickets will be available via Live Nation. I haven’t seen the actual lineup  appear at the Nocturnal website nor the Insomniac pages just  yet. You do have to be at least 18 with identification to go to the show.

Insomniac’s first event at the location was Beyond Wonderland, which seemed to be a hit with fans. Did you go to that one? Are you planning to go to Nocturnal?

ROCK THE BELLS: Fest adds Action Bronson, Girl Talk and more

Rock the Bells promoter Guerilla Union has added more stars to its lineup for the festival series’ 10th anniversary this year, including some big names in electronic dance music.

In addition to hip-hop artists Action Bronson, Big Daddy Kane, Slick Rick & Doug E. Fresh, the lineup also includes mash-up master Girl Talk and Pretty Lights.

While Rock the Bells has always featured some of the biggest names in hip-hop, the festival has always stretched its legs to include other genres, such as when Rage Against the Machine headlined in 2007.

Locally, the festival will be held at San Manuel Amphitheater in Devore on Saturday, Sept. 7 and Sunday, Sept. 8 (sadly, without Pretty Lights for us). There are also dates set for San Francisco, Washington, D.C. and New York.

Other artists announced for the festival at the press conference in New York on June 24 include Deltron 3030, Freddie Gibbs, Freeway, J. Cole, KRS-One, Rapsody & 9th Wonder, Riff Raff, Sean P, Smoke DZA, Wale and YG.

Previously announced artists include the Wu-Tang Clan, with aims of bringing O.D.B. back to life via hologram, Bone Thugs-N-Harmony, with a hologram Eazy-E, Earl Sweatshirt, Immmortal Technique and more.
Read about the initial release of the 2013 Rock the Bells lineup.

Tickets for the San Manuel Amphitheater stop are on sale via Live Nation. Tickets are $165 and $375 before fees. With fees, they’re up to $208.50 for general admission and $421.50 for VIP.

SAN BERNARDINO: Tips to survive a blistering Mayhem Festival

If you’re headed to the kickoff of the sixth edition of  the Rockstar Energy Drink Mayhem Festival  San Manuel Amphitheater on Saturday, June 29, you will need to be prepared–it’s going to be a hot one.

When I say hot, I’m talking triple digits. As of this morning, Devore, where Glen Helen Park is located, looks like it might hit 104 degrees on Saturday, according to Accuweather.

I’m working on my story about Five Finger Death Punch, who have worked their way from being on the side stage of the fest to being one of the big ticket main stage attractions, and I talked to bassist Chris Kael about his festival tips.

Kael boiled it down to three mandates:

1. Wear  sunscreen.

2. Stay hydrated.

3. Pace yourself.

“You’re gonna miss Rob Zombie if you’re drinking that much,” Kael said. “I don’t care how much you want to see Rob Zombie, you’re drinking that much and not drinking water all day, you’re gonna miss the show,” Kael said.

I’m going to add a couple of my own to this one:

-I know it’s a metal fest, but San Manuel Amphitheater is a big open area. There’s not a lot of shade inside the venue grounds. I wouldn’t wear black. If you’re going to wear black, at least let it be loose-fitting clothing. Leather pants are a REALLY bad idea.

-Keep some extra water bottles in your car. After a long day of being in the sun, you will still be thirsty, even if the water is a balmy 98 degrees at midnight. Also, anyone who has been to San Manuel Amphitheater knows that leaving can take a while.  I don’t know how well a cooler would work in the heat, but it might be worth a try.

What are your tips for surviving Mayhem in the heat?

Other artists playing the show include Amon Amarth, Machine Head, Mastodon, Children of Bodom and more.

Gates open at 1 p.m. Saturday.  San Manuel Amphitheater is located at 2575 Glen Helen Parkway in Devore. Tickets are still available for the show and range from $35.50-$75, including the fees. You can pick them up at LiveNation.com.

UPDATE: Here’s the link to more from my interview with Chris Kael from Five Finger Death Punch about Mayhem.

MUSIC: How the Live Nation, Insomniac deal impacts I.E.

Electronic Dance Music promoter Insomniac Events finally revealed the long-rumored partnership with entertainment giant Live Nation Wednesday, June  19 just ahead of Insomniac’s Electric Daisy Carnival festival in Las Vegas.

Insomniac’s CEO Pasquale Rotella made the announcement about the Live Nation/Insomniac partnership  in a panel at his EDM Biz conference. Live Nation is purchasing half of Insomniac. Rotella promises the experiences for fans will stay the same, but that Live Nation is providing infrastructure for the company.

So what does this mean for the Inland Empire, home to some popular Insomniac-produced EDM events?

Expect more of them. Live Nation, which operates San Manuel Amphitheater in Devore, approached the San Bernardino County Board of Supervisors earlier this year to get permission to run four EDM events at the site. Insomniac’s Beyond Wonderland was the first one at the venue. County officials called Beyond Wonderland  a success.

RELATED: Fan photos of Beyond Wonderland’s San Manuel Amphitheater debut

I think we’ll also see multi-day festivals at that site. The Mumford & Sons campout/show on June 2 was a success at using the space at Glen Helen Pavilion and I think it showed Live Nation that the space is viable for larger-scale events. (I’ll go ahead and add weather permitting, because it’s not a great option for the dead heat of  an I.E. summer).

The next Insomniac event on tap for the venue is Nocturnal Wonderland, which will be held Sept. 21 at San Manuel Amphitheater. Tickets go on sale June 27 at noon.

Furthermore, the big entertainment news in Riverside this week is that the city is in talks with Live Nation to operate a number of downtown venues, including the Fox Performing Arts Center, the Fox Entertainment Plaza and the Riverside Municipal Auditorium. Of those spaces, I think the Muni could be the right size to get some EDM solo shows.

EDM fans what do you think about the partnership? Does this bolster Insomniac’s ability to put on various events and expand? To use terrible punk terms, did Insomniac “sell out”?

One of the biggest country music stars is headed to the Inland Empire this summer.

Brad Paisley brings his “Beat This Summer” tour to San Manuel Amphitheater in Devore on Saturday, Aug. 24. The tickets go on sale Friday, June 21 at 10 a.m. and will be available at www.ticketmaster.com and www.livenation.com.

He is supporting his latest release, “Wheelhouse,” which came out in April. “Beat This Summer” is the anthem off the album.

Chris Young, Lee Brice and the Henningsens will join Paisley for the tour.

Paisley, who headlined the Stagecoach Country Music Festival in 2012, who is always a crowd-pleaser, is making the fans part of the show. There’s a free Brad Paisley Lightshow app that turns fans phone into a colorful beacon.

Visit http://lights.bradpaisley.com/ to download the app.

Paisley and Live Nation are donating $1 per ticket to Live Beyond, a nonprofit group based in Nashville that helps bring medical care, clean water and more to communities in Haiti.

Tickets will be $26-$69.75, before fees.

The tickets go on sale Friday, June 21 at 10 a.m. and will be available at www.ticketmaster.com and www.livenation.com.

While I was out at the big Neon Trees show at Vista Murrieta High School on Saturday, June 8, colleague Fielding Buck saddled up and went to Devore to check out Tim McGraw’s “Two Lanes of Freedom Tour.”

Here is a link to Fielding’s photos of the Tim McGraw, Brantley Gilbert and Love and Theft performances and his write-up about the day.

McGraw has been a regular visitor to the Inland area, and his major summer tours always seem to come to San Manuel Amphitheater.

The next big country show coming to the venue is Brad Paisley with Chris Young and Lee Brice on Aug. 24.

Here are some more photos from Saturday night’s show, courtesy of fans in the crowd.
